Two Berry Creative.

Goodies from Two Berry Creative.Washi tape collection.

Today I have a fun little DIY tutorial for you. It’s super cute and super easy.

First I want to talk to you about the lovely Two Berry Creative, our newest sponsor. It’s a wonderful shop filled with loads of pretty things that I adore! Things like chevron washi tape, limeade bakers twine, polka dot paper straws, stamped wooden cutlery, hot pink mini clothespins and loads more.

Two Berry Creative has a huge selection of craft, party, packaging and decor supplies. Anything from tags to bags, stencils to bunting, tins to tape. It’s really my kind of shop and I think you’ll like it too!

WeHeARTYourArt

They even have an ongoing contest where you can win a store credit when you submit photos of your creations with their amazing products. It’s on their blog where they share all sorts of fun DIY ideas and printables. You should really check it out!

They were nice enough to send me some goodies to play with like stainless steel drinking straws, a bundle of different paper straws, blue lattice washi tape, birds on a wire washi tape, raspberry glitter tape and some yellow bakers twine.

I have a huge washi tape addiction as you can see by the photo above and I love any excuse to use the amazing stuff to make ordinary things pretty. I brightened up these average glass canisters I found at the dollar store with some of the pretty blue lattice washi tape which, as luck would have it, matches my upstairs bathroom shower curtain perfectly with colour and pattern. Can’t get any better than that!

What you’ll need…

Cylindrical glass canisters
Washi tape
Scotch tape

Start by taping a row of washi tape under the lip of the lid where the canister is most cylindrical. If the canister you’re embellishing isn’t a cylinder, the tape will get a little wonky. Match the pattern as best you can and, after a little overhang cut the washi tape.

Tape a row of scotch tape parallel to the first row of washi tape just to provide a guide for the next row of washi tape.

After securing and cutting your last row of washi tape, peel off the row of scotch tape to reveal your pretty new canister. Easy peasy and such possibilities!

Rise And Shine.

Sunrise Smoothie for those mornings that require a little extra motivation via @hotpolkadotSunrise Smoothie for those mornings that require a little extra motivation via @hotpolkadot

I’m not a morning person. Not in the least. 7am and I go together like oil and water, fire and ice, toothpaste and ice cream, the Wicked Witch of the West and a bucket of water…

…you get the idea.

Some people need a bit of motivation to wake before the sun. Most turn to a hot cup of coffee to put some pep in their step. Others slip into their runners and hop on the treadmill or onto the pavement to get their blood and brains moving. I haven’t really warmed to coffee that isn’t bathed in sugar and doused with vanilla or chocolate and it’s best I don’t consume all that on a daily basis. As for running, I’m not altogether sure where my running shoes are and, if given the opportunity, I’d trip you in a zombie apocalypse because I quite literally can’t run to save my life.

So, given that I’ve started getting up earlier than I’m used to the last few weeks, I need an alternate source of motivation. When you’re half asleep, you’re sporting a pillow-creased face and your slippers are on the wrong feet, I find that smoothies are a quick and easy thing to make. They don’t take much thought, which is good because I’m pretty sure my grey matter is solar-powered.

So there you have it: Sunrise Smoothie. It’s packed with creamy banana, tart strawberries, sweet pineapple and bright orange, all good vitamins and cheerful fruit to jump start your thinking thingy.

The Secret Ingredient.

Cheesy Ranch Mashed Cauliflower via @hotpolkadot

We’re going to take a little detour today. This blog is normally cruising down sweet street toward glistening pink frosting, melting chocolate chips and happy rainbow sprinkles. Today we’re taking the road less travelled, today we’re speeding down savoury street toward crisp green onions, melting cheddar cheese and tangy ranch dressing.

Today’s detour is brought to you by the kind folks at Hidden Valley Ranch. You may recall last year around this time I shared with you a delicious Vegetarian Ranch Pizza that remains one of my all-time favourite pizzas. This year for the Ranchify Recipe Challenge we are once again tasked with creating a recipe with ranch dressing that makes eating your vegetables not only yummy but fun!

At our house, we’re a huge fan of mashed potatoes. As a picky kid, I used to hide my distasteful vegetables under my mashed potatoes, so I thought why not do the same thing as an adult? Mashed cauliflower is far better for you than a mound of starchy potatoes and, honestly, I think it tastes way better! I like to think of myself as a reformed picky eater. I try to sneak as many vegetables into our meals as I can and this challenge was the best excuse to go one step further.

With loads of fragrant garlic, punches of powerful parmesan, potatoes for texture and, of course, a little help from tangy Hidden Valley Cheese Ranch dressing this is an entree to fool any picky kid or stubborn adult. Cauliflower is the same colour as potatoes so it’s the perfect crime. Feed it to your unsuspecting family and dare them to list the secret ingredient!

Cheesy Ranch Mashed Cauliflower

Makes about 5 servings.

Source: My imagination.

5 large russet potatoes, peeled and chopped
1/2 head cauliflower, chopped
4 cloves garlic
2 tbsp salted butter
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 cup parmesan cheese, grated
1/4 cup Hidden Valley Cheese Ranch dressing
2 tbsp – 1/4 cup milk

Cheddar cheese, grated for garnish
Green onion, sliced for garnish

In a large pot combine the potatoes, cauliflower and garlic, cover with cold water and bring to a boil. Let it simmer for about 20 – 30 minutes until they are tender then drain the water.

Add the butter and salt then mash until no chunks remain. This is more difficult when mashing cauliflower because the vegetable can be more fibrous. Add the parmesan, dressing and milk then whip with a whisk until it’s smooth and airy. Make sure not to add too much milk as the cauliflower absorbs a lot of water while boiling and doesn’t need as much liquid as exclusively mashed potatoes. In fact, you may be surprised to discover that, your mashed cauliflower needs no milk at all.

Transfer to serving dishes or bowls and top with the cheddar and green onion. Enjoy!

And The Winner Is…

How To Tuesday: Funny Bunny.

Learn how to fold your own bunny napkins just in time for Easter via @hotpolkadot.

Growing up in Ontario bunnies were these cute little critters that lived in the field behind my house. They frolicked like cartoon characters come to life and feasted on my mom’s flower gardens. My twenty-four toed double jointed tortoise-shell cat, Scrapper would often wander home with one in his jaws.

Here in Alberta bunnies don’t exist. There are no Thumpers or baby Bugs here. Here is the home of the thirty pound jackrabbit that could probably take on all three of my wimpy squishy cats at once. They hide under the pine trees in our yard and munch on the fallen crab apples when they’re not absconding with small neighbourhood children.

These bunnies are neither fierce or furry. They make a sweet statement on your Easter table and their floppy ears are perfect for wiping away glazed ham and apple pie. I love napkin folding because it’s so versatile, fun and unique. You can have just one set of napkins and fold them into countless shapes to surprise your dinner guests all year long.

Start by folding your napkin in half with the pattern facing out and the seam facing in. Fold it in half lengthwise again to form a long rectangle.

Fold both ends in and down to make a triangular point in the middle. Fold the bottom corners in to meet at the middle and make a kite shape.

Fold the outside corners into the middle again to make a skinnier kite shape. Carefully flip the napkin over.

Fold the widest point straight down. Carefully flip the napkin over again.

Fold the corners in to meet each other and you’ll notice the folds have created little pockets to slip the points into. Secure the points in the pockets and flip the napkin over one final time. Fluff the long points to reveal the bunny ears and admire your cute creation!
